You will need to read Part 1 for this blog to make sense so if you missed that one here is the link to go back and read all about PANAS the positive and negative affect scale. Once you have completed it you will have a score for both positive and negative scale and be able to plot yourself on the grid or graph below.

You will then know which your doninant archetype is and you can progress from there.

Here is a summary on each of the four types.

Mad scientist

If you have above average positive effects and above average negative effects then you’re a mad scientist. Who are always spun up about something.

Judge

If you’re below average positive and below average negative you’re a sober and cool judge.

Cheerleader

With above average positive and below average negative celebrates the good in everything and don’t dwell on the bad.

Poet

Poets who register below average positive and above average negative have trouble enjoying good things, and always know when there is a threat lurking.

I know, I know we can’t all be cheerleaders the world needs other profiles as well. On reflection, you’ll probably realise that it would be a nightmare if everybody was the same because we’d keep making the same mistakes again and again.

Poets, are valuable for their perspective and creativity. Life is always more interesting with mad scientists in the mix. And judges keep us for all from blowing ourselves up with impulsive ideas.

No matter what your profile is you have room to increase happiness in your life to do that you have to understand your natural happiness blend, manage yourself, and play to your strengths.

Let’s say you’re a mad scientist you’ll tend to react strongly to good and bad to things in your life. This might make you the life of the party, but you can exhaust your loved ones and coworkers. You need to know this, and work to manage your strong emotions and reactions.

Maybe you’re a judge, cool as a cucumber perfect for jobs like surgeons or spies, anything that requires keeping your head. You may come across as unenthusiastic at times this can be useful, but may need to work on mustering a little more passion than comes naturally for the sake of others.

Well, perhaps you’re a poet, when everyone says “great” you say “not so fast!” This is important because it can literally or figuratively save lives poets see problems before others do that can make you pessimistic and hard to be around at times as you tend toward melancholy.

Even a cheerleader needs emotional self-management. Everyone loves being a cheerleader, but keep in mind so you’ll probably avoid bad news and have a hard time delivering it and that’s not always a good thing. You will need to work on that so you can give people the truth, see things accurately in life, and not say everything is going to be all right when it just isn’t true.

If any of this is resonating with you and you’d like to complete this task with your work colleages, it is part of a larger presentation I deliver to organisations that are wanting better engagement, better team work and increased productivity = profit. I’d love to chat about your work challenges and how I can help inprove them working alongside you and your team.
