Today, let’s talk about something that’s near and dear to my heart: self-leadership. Now, I know what you might be thinking, “Self-leadership? Isn’t that just a fancy term for being your own boss?” Well, not quite. It’s more like being the CEO of your own life. You call the shots, set the direction, and take responsibility for where you’re headed. Intrigued? Let’s dive in!

So, what exactly is self-leadership? At its core, it’s about taking control of your own destiny. It’s about harnessing your strengths, managing your weaknesses, and guiding yourself towards your goals. Think of it as being the captain of your own ship. You may not always have smooth sailing, but with self-leadership, you can navigate through any storm that comes your way.

Now, you might be wondering, “How do I become a self-leader?” Well, my friend, it all starts with self-awareness. You need to know who you are, what you stand for, and what you want to achieve. Take some time to reflect on your values, passions, and aspirations. What drives you? What are you willing to sacrifice for? Once you have a clear picture of yourself, you can start charting your course.

Next up, we’ve got self-discipline. Ah, yes, the dreaded “D” word. But fear not, for self-discipline is simply the key to unlocking your full potential. It’s about making the hard choices, sticking to your commitments, and pushing through when things get tough. Whether it’s waking up early to hit the gym or staying late to finish that project, self-discipline is what separates the dreamers from the doers.

Self discipiline has a lot to do with boundaries. How will you protect your own time so you can do the things you say you are going to do? Time and energy management are big players here too.

Of course, no journey would be complete without a little bit of resilience. Life is full of ups and downs, twists and turns. And let me tell you, there will be times when you feel like throwing in the towel. But remember, every setback is just a setup for a comeback. With resilience by your side, you can bounce back from failure, learn from your mistakes, and come back stronger than ever.

Three qualities that the science says resilient people exibit are:

  1. REALISTIC: they know bad stuff happens and are prepared for things to not always going the way they want
  2. ATTENTION: they direct their attention towards the things they can influence [control the controllables if you like]
  3. AWARENESS: they are good at asking, “is this helping or harming me?” This can relate to thought and actions

Last but not least, we have self-motivation. Ah, the fire that burns within. It’s what gets you out of bed in the morning, keeps you going when the going gets tough, and propels you towards your dreams. Cultivate that inner fire, my friend. Feed it with inspiration, surround yourself with positive influences, and never lose sight of what you’re working towards. With self-motivation as your fuel, there’s nothing you can’t achieve.

Purpose is the key to intrinsic or inner/self motivation. Finding your “Why” as Simon Sinek wrote in his book, “Start Your Why.” [And Find your Why]

So there you have it, folks. Self-leadership in a nutshell. It’s about knowing yourself, disciplining yourself, bouncing back, and keeping that fire burning bright. So go ahead, take the reins of your life and lead yourself towards the greatness that awaits. The journey won’t always be easy, but trust me, it’ll be worth it. Until next time, keep leading, keep striving, and keep shining bright. Cheers to self-leadership!
