Running on Empty? Why Modern Life is Draining You (And How to Get Your Energy Back)

Ever find yourself saying, “I’m just so tired all the time”, even when you’ve technically had a decent night’s sleep?

You’re not alone. I fell asleep in one of my education sessions this week, it weasn’t boring, I was tired!

More and more people are running through life on fumes. It’s not just about sleep, it’s the constant demands, the noise, the pressure to be “on” all the time. We’ve normalised exhaustion. But just because it’s common, doesn’t mean it’s healthy.

So what’s really going on, and more importantly, how do we get our energy back?

Energy Drain #1: Constant Mental Load

You might not be physically busy, but your brain sure is. Juggling tasks, remembering appointments, replying to messages, second-guessing yourself, it all adds up.

Recharge tip: Offload your brain. Use lists, reminders, calendars, or apps to track what’s in your head — so your head doesn’t have to.

Energy Drain #2: Nervous System Overload

Emails, phone pings, traffic, social media doomscrolling, your nervous system is constantly being pinged. That “wired but tired” feeling? Yep, that’s a sign your system is overstimulated and not properly rested.

Recharge tip: Build in true downtime. Not screen time, but proper pauses: walking, breathwork, lying on the floor doing nothing (yes, really).

Energy Drain #3: Poor Fuel

When you’re busy or stressed, it’s easy to skip meals or load up on quick fixes (sugar, caffeine, more sugar…). But they create peaks and crashes, not sustainable energy.

Recharge tip: Focus on slow-burning foods: protein, healthy fats, fibre. And hydrate. (Seriously. Dehydration mimics fatigue, hydrate like it’s summer all year round.)

Energy Drain #4: Patchy Sleep

Even if you’re in bed for 8 hours, that doesn’t mean your sleep quality is good. Screens, late dinners, stress, or even alcohol can mess with your deep sleep.

Recharge tip: Wind down early. Dim lights. Get off devices. Create a routine that signals to your body it’s time to slow down.

Energy Drain #5: Lack of Meaningful Connection

We’re more connected than ever, but not always in ways that nourish us. Shallow interactions can leave us feeling….empty.

Recharge tip: Reach out to someone who lifts you up. Real conversation is energy-giving. Even a 10-minute laugh can reset your day.

Final Thought:

Modern life isn’t slowing down, but you can. You don’t need a holiday to feel better (although that’d be nice). Small, intentional shifts in how you move, fuel, rest and connect can change the game.
