Great winter recipe: Overnight Oats That Practically Make Themselves

Let’s face it, mornings can be a bit of a scramble. Whether you’re getting yourself out the door, chasing after kids, or just trying to remember if you’ve brushed your teeth, breakfast often ends up being whatever’s quick (or skipped altogether). So, when I spotted this recipe Sarah Michelle Gellar shared through MyFitnessPal’s Meal Planner, I thought, yep, this one’s worth passing on.

It’s an overnight oats recipe that you literally sort out the night before, so it’s waiting for you in the morning. No cooking. No faffing about. Just grab it from the fridge and get on with your day. Ideal if your mornings are anything like mine.

Why it’s worth trying:
It’s got a solid 20 grams of protein, plenty of fibre to keep you full, and a combo of creamy, crunchy, sweet, and tangy that actually feels like something you’d want to eat (not just fuel you choke down). Plus, no added sugar, just the good stuff from fruit and a drizzle of maple (so a little sugar!)

Here’s what you’ll need (makes one serving):

  • ½ cup rolled oats
  • ½ cup nonfat milk (swap in your preferred milk, dairy or plant-based)
  • ¼ cup plain nonfat Greek yoghurt
  • 2 tsp chia seeds
  • ½ tbsp maple syrup
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp sliced almonds
  • ½ a banana, sliced
  • ⅓ cup blueberries

How to make it:

  1. Chuck the oats, milk, yoghurt, chia seeds, maple syrup, and vanilla into a jar or bowl. Give it a good stir.
  2. Cover it and pop it in the fridge overnight.
  3. In the morning, top with banana, blueberries, and almonds. Done!

Nutritional info (if you like the numbers):

  • 77.4mg sodium
  • 65.4g carbs
  • 9.5g fibre
  • 27.6g sugar (0g added sugar)
  • 20g protein

You can tweak it to suit your taste – sub in other berries, add a dollop of nut butter, or switch the almonds for walnuts or seeds. It’s easy to play around with and keep things interesting.
