Hormones are the chemical messengers of the body – each one sending out specific instructions to each organ.
But it’s easy to overlook just how important our hormones are until they aren’t working properly, since they control so many areas of your health – especially your energy levels.
In fact, if you have any one of the following symptoms you may be suffering from what we refer to in lifestyle medicine as adrenal fatigue.
- Salty + sugary cravings
- A “second wind” at night
- Trouble staying asleep
- Low libido
- Mid-day headaches
- Blood sugar problems
- Moodiness
- Weight loss resistance
This is something I am intimately familiar with having experienced it myself and have worked with a number of clients to help them recover from it.
In a healthy individual, your brain ends up telling your adrenal glands what to do through a communications system called the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis), also known as the brain-adrenal axis. But adrenal fatigue happens when there’s a dysfunction of your brain’s communication with your adrenals.

Other than ongoing emotional stress this miscommunication often stems from chronic health stressors such as toxin exposure, microbiome dysfunctions, viral infections, autoimmune conditions, accidents, and food intolerances.
And while it’s easy to dismiss our constant exhaustion and compare ourselves to the endless amount of people who are also tired, just because something is common doesn’t make it normal.
Understanding the patterns that are tiggering your body into the fight flight state is the first step to getting on top of this major health issue. Once you have an understanding of where the triggers lie in your life you can then seek the balance needed to reverse some of the potentially damaging effects it can have on your hormonal system.
This questionnaire is a great tool and one which I use with clients to help guide us to an better understanding of this very issue. Once we have some information we can then work through a plan to getting back to that state of ease rather than dis-ease.
